How To Select A Pressure Sensors
The pressure of a liquid or a gas is measured by a pressure sensor in many different industrial and pumping applications. Pressure transducers are commonly used as a feedback source for PID controllers which provide the error signal in a closed loop control system to regulate the pressure.
It is important that the pressure sensor is compatible with your application. The following characteristics should be considered.
Packaging: Presure transducers come in a range of packages ranging from small plastic housings to robust stainless steel housings. Diaphrams are usually internal, but can be flush mounted, to minimize material being trapped, for hygenic purposes.
Separation: As the monitored medium may be corosive, or high /low temperature, it is sometimes necessary to use an isolation barrier with the pressure transducer. This may be built into the sensor, or may be a separate component.
Temperatue: The pressure measurement can be temperature dependent. Temperature compensation can be built into the transducers to reduce the thermal effects. The operating temperature range is usually provided by the manufacturer. Large errors can occur outside of that range. Very low tempertures in water applications, can cause the water to freeze and damage the sensor.
Vibration/shock effects: Vibration and shock are highly application-specific environmental issues. They should reviewed for fit with manufacturer's specifications.
Hydraulic Control systems can generate severe hydraulic transients that can damage some transducers. Use a snubber device, or a high overload sensor.
Units: sensors can be scaled in a wide range of units such as bar, KPA, inches of mercury etc. Select a tranducer that suits your application.
